Through the memories and the life of Ali, we explore the emotions and experiences of an Afro Latina as well as her family and friends who outline her identity. Over each storyline, we will go inside of Ali’s mind into her childhood where most of her insecurities as a mixed girl originated.
A mix between Ally McBeal and Ugly Betty, each webisode has a comedic tone with each topic that sets the theme each storyline. For instance, social experiences and her lack of work, places Ali in positions where her character is judged by family, friends, and society. Dating and a career choice in fashion are some of the tools used to intertwine Ali’s back-life and the coming into herself as an Afro Latina. Mixed Emotions is about the inability to fit in within the confines of one race and culture. Not Hispanic enough for the Hispanics and not Black enough for the Blacks, Ali tussles with hair, music, style, religion, tradition, and the notion of self-love.
